GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE
August, 1990
run, jane, run
Cleveland's second "rún, jane, run" takes place August 25 and 26 at Cuyahaga Community College's western campus on Pleasant Valley Road in Parma Heights.
The six events planned include a 5K run, a 5K walk, soccer, volleyball and softball tournaments and a fitness challenge. Organizers of the event expect about 700 women to participate.
The originators of “run, jane, run" at the Fort Wayne, Ind., Women's Bureau designed this multi-sport competition for all women who grew up without the encouragement to become anything they wanted.
The name "run, jane, run" was modeled after ideas in the Dick and Jane readers where Dick always enhanced the active-running and exploring-while Jane supported the passive, or stood by and watched Dick: "Look, Jane, look!"
Organizers of the event want everyone to know that Jane can run too. She walks, she swims, she plays ball, and she does all these things well. She can do anything she wants in the healthy, strong image of women today.
“Run, jane, run" offers girls and women the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitive events — team and individual, in an atmosphere supportive of women athletes and local services for women.

"Until Title IX [was implemented] in 1971, women were not able to participate in organized sport after high school," said Chris Ann MacGregor, chairperson of Northeast Ohio's "run, jane, run". "It was all over. [This event] gives a chance for all women to participate in quality competion."
"Run, jane, run" was also created as an ongoing pattern for raising organizational funds. Since its start in 1981, the event has generated over $400,000, involved more than 16,000 female athletes and has grown to a national network with nine local affiliates.
Cleveland's first “run, jane, run” competition was held last September in the face of a West Side Women's Center financial crisis. Over $20,000 was raised to benefit the center.
Womenspace, a local networking organization for women, will sponsor a banquet reception August 23 in commemoration of the 68th anniversary of women's right to vote.
An in-conjunction 5K event, "Walk for Equality," is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m., August 26. The walk is a familyoriented event and is also wheelchair available.
